Doom Duck – A Korean Spring League Final Report

Hello! I’m Korean VG Player Jeon KyungMin, a.k.a. Enq(@enqvgc), favorite Pokémon is Espeon!

It all began from my admiration of Sejun Park and WonSeok Jang(@KrelCROC) that I started to play VGC competitively in 2016. For the first year, I didn’t achieve any notable results at tournaments, but I got to know many Korean VGC players. In 2017, I had reached top cut in a couple of tournaments and made my way to day 2 of the World Championships after finishing 5-2 in day 1.

The Korean National will be held in a month, which is the unique chance to obtain a World invite for Koreans. I wish to get my day 2 invite and aim higher at the 2018 World Championships this year.

Notable finishes:

  • 18′ Korean Spring League 2nd Place
  • WCS2017 Day1 → Day2
  • 17′ Korean Nationals TOP16
  • 17′ Korean Spring League TOP8

Tapu Lele @ Life Orb
Ability: Psychic Surge
EVs: 244 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 4 Spe
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
– Psychic
– Ally Switch
– Protect
– Dazzling Gleam

Tapu Lele blocks priority moves (most notably Fake Out) with its terrain, and can redirect Taunt or strong Fighting-type moves aimed towards Porygon2 with Ally Switch. Thanks to full Special Attack invest and Life Orb, Tapu Lele puts out a lot of damage. Most opponents tend to knock out Tapu Lele first and then Porygon2-Snorlax are positioned perfectly to set up and sweep.

Snorlax @ Aguav Berry
Ability: Gluttony
Level: 50
EVs: 116 HP / 68 Atk / 236 Def / 84 SpD
Relaxed Nature
IVs: 0 Spe
– Belly Drum
– Return
– High Horsepower
– Protect

Since there were so many Incineroar with Knock Off, I thought Recycle was not the best move in the recent metagame. Protect was usually unpredictable so I could get some benefits in certain situations. High horsepower is necessary to deal damage against steel or ghost type Pokemon, such as Metagross or Gengar. EV spread was from Springs'(@dong67888) Winter League top cut team, which was really nice and bulky.

Porygon2 @ Eviolite
Ability: Trace
Level: 50
EVs: 244 HP / 4 Atk / 140 Def / 116 SpD
Sassy Nature
IVs: 0 Spe
– Trick Room
– Psych Up
– Return
– Recover

MVP of this team! There were a lot of cycle teams in the meta, so I thought Porygon2 stalling would work well and it actually did. With Porygon2-Snorlax on the field, Belly Drum-Psych Up makes Porygon2 a monster with tons of offense and bulk. For the ability, Juyoung Hong(WCS2017 Senior Champion) advised to me, “Download P2 was good only last year, now Trace is much better”. So I just went with that and it gave me many advantages by copying Intimidate, Huge Power, or Shadow Tag.

Mawile-Mega @ Mawilite
Ability: Intimidate
Level: 50
EVs: 252 HP / 204 Atk / 52 SpD
Brave Nature
IVs: 0 Spe
– Iron Head
– Play Rough
– Fire Fang
– Rock Slide

Mawile’s move pool is very wide, so I gave up Protect. It was a tough decision, but Play Rough and Iron Head were important STAB moves, Fire fang was the only deal source against Steel-types, and Rock Slide helped the match-up against Charizard-Y as well as finish off weakened Pokemon. I didn’t run Sucker Punch because I thought it was hard to use due to the Psychic Terrain, but I did miss having that move in game 1 of the final match. For the SpD EVs, it gives Mawile a very high chance to live Heatran’s Heat Wave.

Incineroar @ Firium Z
Ability: Intimidate
Level: 50
EVs: 180 HP / 252 Atk / 4 Def / 68 SpD / 4 Spe
Adamant Nature
– Flare Blitz
– Knock Off
– Fake Out
– U-turn

Incineroar was the best supporter to set up Trick Room. Intimidate supports the team against physical attackers, Fake Out can stop one Pokemon for a turn, and slow U-turn allows Mawile/Snorlax to come in without taking any damage. It makes the team more flexible and the damage roll was not bad. I think Incineroar is a decent Pokemon in the current metagame.

Gothitelle @ Mental Herb
Ability: Shadow Tag
Level: 50
EVs: 228 HP / 124 Def / 156 SpD
Sassy Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
– Trick Room
– Heal Pulse
– Psyshock
– Protect
For SpD, It can survive Ludicolo’s Z-Hydro Pump in rain. Heal Pulse is for restoring Snorlax because mine didn’t have Recycle and Mental Herb made Gothitelle more stable. Since its item was not 50% berry, it can’t set up Trick Room when my opponent doubles up on Gothitelle, so I used Protect too.

Team Play

The first priority goal for this team is setting up the Trick Room the under protection of Fake Out or Ally Switch. Once TR was set, this squad can easily dominate the opponent’s Pokemon with the Belly Drum-Psych Up combo or with Mega Mawile.

Core Combinations and Common Leads

Ally Switch from Tapu Lele is hard to predict, so it works well. Once TR was set, Tapu Lele is better to be knocked out to get Porgyon2-Snorlax both on the field so they can set up and sweep the opponent’s Pokemon.

This lead is pretty effective against Steel-type Pokemon such as Metagross or Aegislash.

After Tapu Lele was knocked out, Snorlax would come in to Belly Drum and Porygon2 will Psych Up off of Snorlax to get +6 Atk too. If the opponent’s Fighting-type Pokemon is still alive, Mawile will do its job very well.

Team Match-ups

Rain: Politoed is a great threat to this team since it can learn Perish Song, Haze, and Encore. All of these moves are enough to disrupt the Snorlax set up. I used to lead with Tapu Lele-Porygon2 and attack Politoed with Tapu Lele while setting up Trick Room with Porygon2. It’s very important to knock out Politoed ASAP in this match-up.

Gardevoir/Incineroar: The main point of this match-up is maintaining Porygon2’s Eviolite from Incineroar’s knock off. After Trick Room was set, Incineroar is also dealt with pretty well.

Metagross/Lele: Usually lead Tapu Lele-Porygon2 and kept Incineroar in the back instead of Mawile. After Tapu Lele gets KO’d, I send in Incineroar which can deal well against both Metagross and Lele.

Genga: Not good matchup; lead with Tapu Lele and Gothitelle. Both of them will not be knocked out from Gengar’s Shadow Ball, so Tapu Lele will Psychic Gengar and Gothitelle will set up Trick Room. Once TR was set up, I would be in a much better position. From there, win the game with Mawile or Snorlax.

Haze is very dangerous!

Thank you for reading this analysis and thank you to Springs(@dong67888) for helping me to cover my English.
